ZAMALEK 1911

Zamalek Sporting Club, also known as Zamalek Royal Club, has a rich history rooted in the early 20th century. Founded in 1911 as the Cairo International Sports Club by a Belgian lawyer, Georges Merzbach , the club was initially known as "Mokhtalat" or "The Mixed Club," reflecting its inclusive nature and appeal to both Europeans and Egyptians. The club's name and identity evolved over time, eventually becoming Zamalek SC after the 1952 Egyptian revolution .

  •        Early Years:
The club was founded on January 5, 1911, with the initial name Cairo International Sports Club. It quickly gained popularity and became known as "Mokhtalat" or "El Mokhtalat" due to its diverse membership.
  • The Zamalek Name:
  • While "Mokhtalat" was the initial name, the club was unofficially known as Zamalek, a name derived from the area where it was located. The name became official after the 1952 revolution.
  •  Royal Patronage:
  • In 1941, the club received royal patronage from King Farouk I and was renamed Farouk El Awal Club (Farouk I Club). This royal association further solidified the club's status in Egyptian society.
  •  Post-Revolution:
  • Following the 1952 revolution, the club reverted to its unofficial name, Zamalek, which was then adopted as the official name.
  •  Zamalek Today:
  • Zamalek SC is a major force in Egyptian football and one of the most popular clubs in Africa and the Middle East. They have won numerous championships and participate in various international competitions.
